Singapore introduced Natural Gas in 2006, (or earlier) and I known many people who have converted their vehicles to use Natural Gas. In fact, some taxis are using it too. I really liked the idea as I've seen the MBTA in Massachusetts converted their fleet to Natural Gas, and it has improved my quality of life as the exhaust gases were much more tolerable compared to the diesel fumes.
I thought that with the Government's introduction of newer fuels and push for more sustainable fuels and cleaner air, this trend will catch on, however to my disappointment, it was like any other sustainable initiatives in Singapore -- just for show.
Solar energy, hybrid vehicles -- all seemed to be "taxed" as luxury items. I really would like to see the government use biofuels or natural gases for public transportation as the copious thick fumes emitted by the buses makes me drive with my windows closed, and I have to turn on the aircon, wasting more gas.
Singapore has f oil refineries and has a carbon footprint that is one of the highest in the world. Singapore seemed to embrace the idea and has many foreign investors coming to invest, however Singapore is not using any.
Many countries in the region like Phillipines, Malaysia and Indonesia have begun using sustainable sources of fuels, but why is Singapore so slow and adamant when it comes to the environment? Isn't Singapore a first world country, and shouldn't the government that mandate everything else mandate the use of these sustainable fuels?
Some of these blends of biodiesel caneven cut carbon dioxide output of 10%. They would also require no change in pumps or modification to cars to use them.
I hope there are a lot of plans and action soon as for the Natural Gas initiative, I've still not know any of my friends who converted their cars to use it, pump it.
