Today's work ethic just no longer works

Great Article!

How true!

-- Iron Bowl

Today's work ethic just no longer works

The work ethic is dead. Younger generations in the workforce have killed it off. If you're under 30, "work" has a different meaning than it did -- for the younger employee, work is something to do with your hands while chatting on your cellphone . . . unless it's something to do with your mouth while text messaging.

"Are you working?"

"I'm here, aren't I?"

Here I am, give me a high five and a Starbucks. And it's nobody's fault but ours, the boomers. We're the ones who were squealing with delight if the kid drew an egg. We were the ones who said, "Johnny tried, and that's what counts." And that's why these misguided Johnnies show up and give working a try, then wonder where they find the counter where success is handed out. They see "work ethic" as "show up and shut up," and no wonder they want no part of it.

What's called for is a way of working beyond mere work, something higher, something finer. What's needed is a Contribution Ethic and -- hello! -- it always has been needed. People with a contribution ethic have always been rare, and they have always been who drive the economy and the world conversation.

The Contribution Ethic

1. Just help. Make yourself useful. You aren't just there, waiting. There's no waiting. Just help.

2. A great player is worth less than a great teammate. (aka "The Steve Nash Effect" or "The Yankees' Blunder") A great player might or might not improve the group, but a great teammate always does. (Imagine a sales team of 10, each selling 10 units a month. A star might come in as the 11th employee and sell 50 percent more than everyone else, raising the group to 115. A great teammate, however, might come in and sell 12 units, but also help everyone else sell 12, raising the department's output to 132. Thus, the great teammate seems to produce less but is actually more than twice as valuable.)

3. Your half is 60 percent.

4. Innovation is a subversive activity. You can't expect management and/or co-workers to drool with excitement over your "I have an idea!" After all, most ideas are suggestions and most suggestions are complaints. On the other hand, if an idea is truly original, then expect resistance; indeed, welcome it as a measure of originality. Organizations are built for continuity not creativity. That's why you need to demonstrate how the idea will work, and you might need the guerrilla's wiles. Ideas are nothing next to proposals; proposals are nothing next to experiments.

5. Giving time without attention is a gift-wrapped empty box.

6. Assume the best. If you accept that every 10th person is a jerk and that you're a jerk one-10th of the time, then you can meet the world with the smile of the victor, for the odds are with you.

7. Being right is overrated. If your goal is usefulness, then what matters is progress.

8. Being wrong is underrated. Admitting you were wrong is wisdom gained.

9. Always bring something to read.

10. Think like a hero; work like an artist. If the end is helpfulness, that's the hero mind. If the means is exploration and learning, that's the artist's mind. When kindly attention meets curiosity, you move gracefully through the world.

Greenyarn: The Eco-Friendly Fabric Alternative
by Liz Keller
EDGE Style Contributor
Thursday Mar 22, 2007

Let me start with the perfect description of Greenyarn as stated on their website: "We are a nanotechnology company that develops advanced materials for consumers seeking eco-friendly alternatives to conventional fabrics." Doesn’t that just sound so smart? This is a company that truly cares about the products that they create and the people that use them (Meaning you and me, right? You’ll use them?). Greenyarn’s focus is on creating products using an environmentally friendly process and materials, but they also like things to be comfy and cozy. This all-natural product line is unique and environmentally responsible. Let’s talk about the fun stuff to buy.

Fleece Blanket
You need this in your house! Spring may be here technically, but let’s face it, we still get those chilly nights and need a cuddly fleece blanket to warm us up. The Eco-fabric is ultra soft and helps to prevent static, so no more reaching down to pull up that cozy blanket only to have an enormous spark snap you out of your chair. Not pleasant. The blanket measures 43" x 53" and are a décor- friendly charcoal gray. Eco-fabric is also washable without any loss of the natural benefits. They retail for $79.

Moist + Soft Cloth Mask
Who doesn’t love an at-home facial treatment, especially as spring is finally in the air and we all have that haggard winter look (oh, it’s not just me is it???). Interestingly enough, Greenyarn has a product called Moist+ that is a facial treatment created from Eco-cotton, which has the same benefits as Eco-fabric. It emits far-infrared radiation that helps to improve circulation and help metabolism. The mask contains rose hip extract, marine collagen, Hyalurosan, Mulberry Bark Extract and Matricaria extract, to moisturize your skin and boost its radiance. Be forewarned, it is different. You pull a saturated cloth mask out of an envelope that is dark gray and would scare the crap out of anyone who happens to walk in on you once you’ve applied it. It feels great though, and leaves skin feeling soft and refreshed. At just $5, it is an incredible value for a spa-like experience.

Eco-Fabric Short Socks
So comfy, so cozy, these socks are a must. The Eco-fabric is antibacterial and antifungal which makes them ideal for working out, and they are cut low to work well with a running shoe. The fabric is also deodorizing and anti-static. They have a reinforced heel and toe and come in three color options: black and dark gray, black and light gray, or black and white to work easily with any clothing options. I never knew socks could be so well rounded! They come on several sizes and are available for about $10.

The Greenyarn line is truly special with natural benefits and the added bonus of a thoughtful and responsible company. The material, fiber (cotton or polyester) containing nano-particles of bamboo-charcoal, boasts amazing qualities you can’t find in other materials. It is an eclectic mix of products to be sure. Beyond what I mention above there are elbow and knee gaurds, wristbands, and yoga socks. There are other things in the works though so keep your eyes peeled. Learn more about Greenyarn at www.greenyarn.com, and shop away at www.greenyarn.com. Greenyarn is based right here in Boston, so get buying and support this great local company!

Automation=boredom

I'm a little bummed. I recently configured google mail to scrape my various email accounts and consolidate all my mail in gmail. Now I find I have so much extra time around my email that I'm actually bored! It turns out the mental exercise of sifting through the streams and streams of junk mail for the occasional real email was like a game I could play at work. Now google does everything for me and my mail comes through shiny and unmolested.

Guess I'll have to find something actually productive to do with my extra time! :-)

Woman 'allergic' to mobiles and microwaves paints her house black

By LIZ HULL - More by this author » Last updated at 17:47pm on 21st March 2007

Comments Comments (24)

For most people talking on a mobile phone, cooking dinner in the microwave or driving in a car is simply part of modern living in 21st century Britain.

But completing any such tasks is impossible for Debbie Bird - because she is allergic to modern technology.

Scroll down for more...

Debbie Bird

Debbie and her husband Tony often sleep in a silver-plated mosquito net

The 39-year-old is so sensitive to the electromagnetic field (emf) or 'smog' created by computers, mobile phones, microwave ovens and even some cars, that she develops a painful skin rash and her eyelids swell to three times their size if she goes near them.

As a consequence, Mrs Bird, a health spa manager, has transformed her home into an EMF-free zone to try and stay healthy.

The walls are all covered in special carbon paint, the windows have a protective film on them and she and her husband, Tony, 45, even sleep under a silver-plated mosquito net to deflect the radiowaves.

Debbie Bird's eyelids swell to three times their size when she is exposed to microwaves

'I can no longer do things that I used to take for granted,' Mrs Bird said last night. 'My day-to-day life has been seriously affected by EMF.

'I don't own a microwave. I don't use mobile phones at all. I can't even use a cordless phone. We have a plasma screen TV because the old style one gave out gamma rays, which brought on my reaction.

'I can't even get in my friend's BMW. If I do I immediately start getting a headache and my head starts tingling.

'Even shopping is a problem. I can't go in places like Starbucks where there is Wi-Fi broadband and always have to be aware of my environment.'

Mrs Bird first realised that she was electro-sensitive when she moved with her husband, a writer and environmental consultant, and their eight-year-old daughter, Antonia, to a new apartment in Bowden, near Altrincham, Greater Manchester.

Unbeknown to her, however, her neighbours were all using wireless internet connections and had cordless phones.

'At first I couldn't sleep,' Mrs Bird added. 'Then I started developing a skin reaction. I had a burning sensation down my face, on my forehead and elbows. I looked like I had been severely burnt on my forehead.

'I felt very tired all the time and my eye-lids would swell up to three times their size.'

Debbie's home is a radio-wave free zone. A clear protective film has been put on the windows and the walls have been redecorated with a special carbon paint

Mrs Bird was referred to a skin specialist, but the problem was so severe the couple decided they had no option but to move to a new home, in nearby Hale, Greater Manchester.

They took electromagnetic readings of the property and set about making it safe. The house was completely re-wired, had clear protective film put on the windows and every wall was painted with black carbon paint, which cost £250 per tin, to deflect the harmful rays.

All the couple's bedroom curtains are also silver-plated and they sleep under a silver-plated mosquito net, which also protects against radiation.

Although the renovation was not cheap, Mrs Bird said it was worth it. Her skin rashes have gone and she no longer has trouble sleeping. Officially in the UK, electro-sensitivity (ES) does not exist as a medical condition.

Doctors say there is little scientific evidence to back up a link between EMF and poor health. They claim the symptoms, often attributed to flu or viruses, are psychosomatic.

But campaigners disagree. They reckon around 500 people are already being treated for ES and as many as five per cent of the population could be affected.

Rod Read, director of Electro-Sensitivity UK, said: 'I have seen hundreds of people who exhibit symptoms they directly attribute to the electrical items around them.

'But it is a politically incorrect illness, the Government or electronic companies don't want people thinking their mobile phones or microwaves are dangerous.

'In the past doctors have dismissed symptoms as something like flu, but the pathology is now established. It has a huge detrimental physical effect and stops people living normal lives.'

Cool Cat - But what is so amazing about it again?

Cat can say his own name

A Chinese man says his cat can clearly pronounce his own name.

This cat can say his own name, according to his owner /Lu Feng

Mr Sun, from Beijing, says two-year-old Agui says his name when he gets frightened.

"Last year I was helping him take a bath, and he was scared of the water. After couple of 'miaow's, I heard a clear 'Agui'," he told the Star Daily.

"At first I doubted what I was hearing, but he kept calling his name, very clearly, and sounding like a child."

Mr Sun says that from then on, Agui has said his own name whenever he is frightened.

"At bath time, when he gets a shot from the vet, or gets scared playing outside, he cries out, 'Agui'," he added.

The Fangzhuang Pet Hospital has filmed Agui saying his name when Mr Sun pretended to give him a bath.

A hospital spokesman said repeatedly hearing his own name would have made an impression on Agui which comes out under stress.

"If the owner can give him systematic training, the cat should be able to speak more Chinese," a spokesman claimed.

Police warn of uptick in car breaks

By Suzanne Smalley, Globe Staff

Phillip Elliot locked his construction van when he parked at a work site in Allston, but that didn’t keep him from being one of more than 1,400 victims of a vehicle break-in this year in Boston.

Larcenies from vehicles surged by 19 percent citywide by Tuesday, compared with last year at the same time. Break-ins are up in eight of 12 police districts, and some areas, such as East Boston and West Roxbury, have been particularly hard hit, with incidents more than doubling.

Police issued a community alert Tuesday and said they are increasing patrols and organizing sting operations with valuables left in decoy cars. Department officials said the most common items stolen from cars are money, stereos, cellphones, iPods, and other electronic equipment.

They also urged motorists to take precautions: Don’t leave cash or valuables in the open, lock doors and windows, and install tapered door lock buttons that make it more difficult for thieves.

But even those who lock away their valuables can be victims.

Police Deputy Superintendent Daniel P. Linskey said commanders noticed the vehicle break-in trend at a recent weekly meeting where they share information and use computers to map and track crimes.

"We were seeing we were doing pretty good on the violent crime stuff, but we were noticing an increase on car breaks, [and] it was going across district boundaries," Linskey said.

He said he did not know what has been driving the surge in larcenies from vehicles, though he speculated that a crackdown on aggressive panhandlers may be a factor.

"They’ve actually made statements, 'If you’re not letting me panhandle I’ve got to do something else,’’’ he said in an interview Tuesday.

Linskey said police commanders in Roxbury have started leaving valuable goods in decoy vehicles to try to catch thieves. The tactic has been so successful, he said, that other districts will soon set up similar stings.

He said the department also is counting on a campaign to educate the public not to leave valuables in open view. A surprising number of people, he said, particularly visitors less aware of crime, learn that lesson the hard way.

N.H. bill would restrict phoning while driving

CONCORD, N.H. --State lawmakers will consider once again whether to restrict chatting on cell phones while driving.

House Bill 795 would bar the use of handheld cell phones, but allow drivers to call on hands-free phones, even though a recent University of Utah study found that both are equally distracting.

The bill contains exceptions for police, firefighters and other emergency responders. A public hearing is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.

A similar bill was introduced in 2000 by the late state Rep. Robert Milligan, a Merrimack Republican, but defeated after intense lobbying by the telecommunications industry.

However, a negligent driving law sponsored by Milligan passed in 2002. That allows police to cite drivers for any activity -- whether talking on a cell phone, changing CDs, reading or applying make-up -- that causes them to break other driving rules. Only three states have such laws.

Two years ago, the Legislature considered a bill to ban cell phone use by teenage drivers, but it was defeated.

State police report distracted drivers are the second-leading cause of accidents in New Hampshire, after speeding. State data show that of 166 fatal crashes in 2005, drunken driving was a factor in 60 and distracted driving led to 15.

Wonder Woman, Your Car Is Ready…

wireframe-subaru-2.jpg

Computer-generated outline? Nope. It’s real. Dubbed “Modern Japanese Classic,” this 1:1 Subaru Impreza wire frame sculpture is the work of British artist Benedict Radcliffe. Apparently local traffic cops weren’t pleased that the art was parked outside of the gallery on the street, as over the course of a few days, it was issued a few parking tickets! The marilyn-bmw-hood.jpgpiece was recently displayed as part of a larger Radcliffe show at the Paul Smith Gallery in Mayfair last month, and we’re sorry we missed it.

Among some of the artist’s other transportation-related pieces? An interesting Marilyn Monroe painting on a car hood, with BMW’s roundel emblem employed as the iconic actress’ beauty mark. Radcliffe also displayed a full-size vehicle made up of the two halves of a black Volkswagen Golf, giving the sculpture a minivan/transportation pod look. Great stuff.
We stumbled upon this artist’s work and have a hard time finding a single source for more images and information, so we’ve aggregated a bunch of links and a couple of images after the jump. If you know more about this artist, please let us know by leaving a comment!

One dead, firefighters hurt after Brookline fire near BU

brookline-fatal6.JPG.jpg
(George Rizer/Globe Staff)

Two young people hugged outside a fatal fire in Brookline this morning in an off-campus apartment house near Boston University.

By John R. Ellement, George Rizer, and Andrew Ryan, Globe Staff

A party near Boston University took a deadly turn early this morning when a four-alarm blaze tore through an off-campus apartment, killing a young man and injuring two firefighters.

"There was some partying going on," said Brookline Fire Chief John Green this morning standing outside the charred, yellow-brick row house. "He was part of the party."

The victim, whose name was not released, was found inside a closet on the third floor.

"It appears he got confused," Green said. "He went into the closet to get out and was likely overcome by smoke."

Colin Riley, a school spokesman, said that he was told by Brookline police that the victim was college-age male who was not a BU student. Brookline police did not immediately return a phone message seeking comment.

This week is spring break at BU so most students are out of town, Riley said. The blaze displaced roughly a dozen students, and the school is working to find temporary housing for those affected.

Green said the victim came to the party and was unfamiliar with the building and was unfamiliar with the room in which he died.

At about 1 a.m., people at the party lit a charcoal barbecue in an old-fashioned grill on a rear wooden porch on the third floor, Green said. The blaze was reported at about 6 a.m. in the three-story building on St. Marys Street, just over the Boston city near Commonwealth Avenue and BU's campus.

The building, which was home to predominately students, is two blocks from the site of a blaze Feb. 25 that left two BU juniors dead.

Several officials from BU were on the scene this morning. Shortly after the fire, an MBTA bus took at least 20 residents away from the scene.

This morning, firefighters from Boston and Newton assisted the Brookline Fire Department battling the flames. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Two firefighters suffered non-life-threatening injuries when a Brookline firefighter fell through a floor and a Boston firefighter hurt his back.

When Brookline firefighters arrived, they found heavy smoke and flames on the third floor. It appears that the fire may have started there on the top level, near the back of the building on the wooden porch where the students lit the barbecue. It is against town code to have a grill anywhere but on the ground floor of a residence, Green said.

The porch was also used as a smoking room and had an overstuffed chair and couch.

Firefighters used ladders to rescue residents from the flames, escorting them from the upper floors to the ground. They did not find the victim in the closet the first time they checked the third floor, which was filled with thick smoke, Green said. When they searched the third floor a second time, the young man's body was discovered in the closet, Green said.

In February, a candle ignited a blaze that ripped through an off-campus housing complex at 21 Aberdeen Street and killed two BU juniors -- Rhiannon McCuish, 21, of Mashpee, and Stephen Adelipour 21, of Great Neck, N.Y. A third student, Steven Boursiquot, 22, a senior from Dix Hills, N.Y., suffered burns on 20 percent of his body.

I agree with this article and the government is not really going to "Arrest the illegal immigrants"

This is pretty sad, as it shows that Illegal immigrants are forever going to be illegal, avoiding the authorities, and accept their fate in the "Sweatshop".

Activists that want fair trade in other countries fail to see that the US exploits these illegal immigrants and many products made in these factories have "blood in them".

After this show of "inhumane arrests and deportation" in New Bedford, the message is clear. If any illegal immigrant wants rights or anyone wants to fight for their rights and report their employer to the authorities, these immigrants would be instantly shipped off, leaving their children behind with friends, relatives or by themselves. And in most cases, not being able to afford to look after them as the sole breadwinner is in detention.

With all these illegal immigrants hiding, and now afraid to speak up, this situation is going to stay, and will not change as long as the broken immigration laws are here.

There are 12 million illegal immigrants here and clearly deportation of them is difficult, if not impossible.

If they brave the seas or the border guards to get here, do you think deporting some of them would make them decide to leave the country to go home?

-- Iron Bowl

Illegal immigrants are here to stay

First of two parts

SUPPOSE YOU LEARN that a New England manufacturer is exploiting its employees, many of them illegal immigrants, with wretched working conditions. It fines them for talking on the job, refuses to pay overtime, and penalizes them for bathroom breaks of more than two minutes, all in addition to low wages, long hours, and squalid facilities. What do you do?

Well, if you're the United States government, you send armed agents to haul the workers off in shackles to a military base 100 miles away, then fly scores of them more than 2,000 miles to a holding pen in Texas. You provide the frightened detainees with little information and no access to lawyers. You act so rashly that many of those you seize are separated from their children and can't get word to spouses or babysitters. You display such ineptitude, in fact, that babies end up in the hospital, dehydrated, after their nursing mothers are taken away.

The company's owner and managers, meanwhile, you arrest, charge, and release on bail. They reopen for business the next day.

That pretty much sums up last week's federal immigration raid on Michael Bianco Inc., a leather-goods factory in New Bedford, which has been deservedly condemned as a humanitarian fiasco. But it is more than that. It is also an object lesson in the incoherence of American immigration policy, and in the harm being caused by the national obsession with, and hostility toward , illegal immigrants.

Immigration hardliners wax wroth at any suggestion that illegal aliens be given some way to come out of the shadows and legalize their status. Every such proposal they reject scornfully as "amnesty." Illegal aliens are criminals, they fume. Such people should be deported, not rewarded.

But no one this side of the fever swamps really believes that 12 million people -- the population of Pennsylvania -- can be rounded up and expelled. The raid in New Bedford involved just 361, and look what a botch was made of that. To deport 33,000 times that number would require the iron fist of a Stalin . No sane American would tolerate it.

Ah, but mass expulsions aren't necessary, some hardliners say. Cracking down on just a few thousand illegal immigrants, or maybe a few dozen thousand, would "persuade more and more of them to give up and deport themselves," claims Mark Krikorian, executive director of the Center for Immigration Studies . He estimates that 6 million illegal immigrants would pick up and leave if only "the government summoned the gumption to stand up to the elite interests that support open borders."

But immigrants who braved daunting risks to be here, many of whom already live in perpetual fear of being caught and deported, will not pack their bags quite so readily. On the contrary, writes Manhattan Institute scholar Tamar Jacoby (no relation to me), stiffer enforcement of the immigration laws -- i.e., more New Bedfords -- will only "force them further underground -- further into the arms of smugglers, document forgers, and unscrupulous, exploitative employers."

We might as well face reality: Most illegal immigrants aren't going anywhere. They are here to stay -- working, raising families, living among us . Doesn't it behoove us to figure out a way to assimilate them into the national mainstream, instead of consigning them to a permanent limbo that does neither them nor us any good?

To say that, though, is to run smack into the chief impediment to sensible thought about illegal immigrants: the fixation on their status as violators of the law. "What part of 'illegal' don't you understand?" seal-the-border types demand in high dudgeon, as though the fact that many immigrants break the law to come here is all we need to know about them.

Is it? Or is it at least as important to know why they come? And how they act once they're here? And whether Americans benefit from their presence?

If tens of millions of drivers consistently break the interstate speed limit, do we assume that they are all criminals who should lose their licenses and be banned from the highways? No: A more plausible explanation is that the speed limit is too low for safe highway driving and ought to be raised. By the same token, if hundreds of thousands of immigrants come here illegally each year, is it realistic to conclude that we have a massive crime problem for which a ferocious crackdown is the only solution? Perhaps it is the case instead that America's immigration quotas are simply too low for the world's most dynamic economy. And perhaps the persistent influx of industrious workers is not a plague to be cursed, but a blessing to be better managed.

Loremo AG set to debut 2+2 coupe that gets over 150 MPG

I'm happy when my little hatchback gets 31 MPG on the highway, but German-based Loremo AG is set to debut a 2+2 coupe at the Geneva Auto Show that gets a whopping 157 MPG.

The $13,000 Loremo LS weighs just 992 lbs and features a two cylinder turbo-diesel engine pumping out a hardly earth shattering 20HP. The mid-engine, RWD coupe gets roughly 157 miles per gallon and has a cruising range of 807 miles. It goes 0-60 in 20 seconds and has a top speed of 99 MPH.

A more powerful $17,800 Leromo GT will also be available. It weighs in slightly more at 1,036 lbs and features a 3 cylinder turbo-diesel with 50 HP. It gets 87 miles per gallon, has a cruising range of 497 miles, goes 0-60 in 9 seconds and tops out at 137 MPH.

Both will come standard with airbags, radio and particle filter. Options will include a dashboard computer, A/C, MP3 player, navigation system, and leather.

Safety Features
Venture Vehicles' VentureOne to be available in hybrid and all-electric versions

Hybrid technology just got a little bit cooler with the unveiling of the Venture Vehicles VentureOne. This 3-wheel plug-in hybrid promises 0-60 times in under 6 seconds, a top speed of 100MPH, a range of 350 miles and a price tag south of $20,000.

The 1,200 pound VentureOne is classified as a motorcycle by the NHTSA since it features three wheels. And similar to a motorcycle, the passenger compartment of the VentureOne can tilt 45 degrees left or right when entering a corner. Venture Vehicles calls the system Dynamic Vehicle Control or DVC and it is currently in its 18th generation.

The hydro-mechanical DVC system uses a combination of the driver's input from the steering wheel and the tilting of the chassis to maintain balance and direction of travel. Chassis tilt is nominal at low vehicle speeds as the steering angle of the front wheel dictates the direction of travel. As speed increases, the angle of the front wheel is not a major factor in changing direction -- the driver's input is instead transferred to the tilt of the chassis which in turn provide direction change.

For propulsion, the hybrid versions of the VentureOne use a small gasoline engine, a 15kW (VentureOne e50) or 20 kW (VentureOne Q100) generator, two in-wheel 25 kW electric motors, a four gallon fuel tank and a 3 kWh lithium-ion battery. The all-electric Venture EV uses two 20 kW electric motors and a 17 kWh lithium-ion battery pack.

According to Venture Vehicle founder Ian Bruce, the lithium-ion batteries used in the VentureOne weigh only 45 pounds compared to the 900 pounds for the all-electric Tesla roadster.

The VentureOne e50 has a top speed of 100MPH, can run 0-60 in under 6 seconds and has a driving range of 350 miles. The VentureOne Q100 pushes the top speed to 120MPH with a 0-60 time of under 5 seconds. Range, however, drops to 300 miles. The all-electric VentureOne EV features a top speed of 75MPH, 0-60 time of 8 seconds and a range of 120 miles.

Prices are expected to range from $18,500 for the hybrid VentureOne e50 to $23,000 for the all-electric VentureOne EV.

Americans don't save!

I would say this results are very true as my friends who earn $100k a year still have to borrow money from me for food sometimes.

This is pretty crazy.

I guess it boosts the economy like daylight savings.

Many US workers live paycheck to paycheck-survey

NEW YORK --Four out of 10 U.S. workers often or always live from paycheck to paycheck, according to a survey released Monday.

Women are more likely to live paycheck to paycheck, at 47 percent, than men, at 36 percent, according to the survey conducted for CareerBuilder.com, an online job site based in Chicago. Overall, 41 percent of workers say they often or always live paycheck to paycheck, it said.

Also, 41 percent of women say they do not have enough income to live comfortably, compared with 29 percent of men. U.S. government and other research reports have found that women earn about 77 cents for every dollar earned by men for comparable work. Women are also more likely to be single parents.

The new survey said 19 percent of workers who earn $100,000 or more annually often or always live paycheck to paycheck.

It found 58 percent of respondents report they set a budget each month. But one in five say they typically spend more than their budget, most often blowing it by eating out.

The survey also said one in five do not set aside any money for savings each month. Of those who do, 14 percent save $500 or more a month, 28 percent save $100 or less and 16 percent save less than $50.

It said 26 percent of women do not set aside any savings, compared with 17 percent of men.

The survey of 6,169 full-time adult workers was conducted between Nov. 17 and Dec. 11, 2006 by Harris Interactive and has a margin of error of plus or minus 1 percentage point.

No military solution to Iraq, warns new US commander

General Petraeus was appointed to oversee the fresh strategy in Iraq, aimed at ending the daily violence which has plagued the nation

General Petraeus was appointed to oversee the fresh strategy in Iraq, aimed at ending the daily violence which has plagued the nation

The new US commander in Iraq has admitted that insurgents have intensified their attacks during the security crackdown in Baghdad, as he warned that there was no military solution to the nation’s bloody conflict.

General David Petraeus, appointed last month to oversee the White House’s fresh plan for Iraq, said that his troops were limited in what they alone could achieve and that some of the militant groups causing violence in the country would have to be engaged in political discussions.

The latest security sweep would take months, during which “sensational attacks” would continue, he said, but there had already been encouraging signs of improvement including a fall in sectarian killings.

In his first press conference since taking command, the General added he saw no immediate need to call for yet more US troops, but that the reinforcements already requested were likely to stay well past the summer months, and would be sent to areas outside Baghdad where militants were regrouping.

One of the key regions will be Diyala province, northeast of the capital, where suspected Sunni extremists fleeing the security operation in Baghdad have been gathering, he said.

Asked about reports that his second in command, General Raymond Odierno, had recommended the additional 21,500 troops would need to stay in Iraq until early 2008, he replied: “I’ve certainly not reached a conclusion yet about that I think you generally think that if you’re going to achieve the kind of effects that we probably need, I would think it would need to be sustained certainly some time well beyond the summer, but again we’ll have to see.

On Tuesday, a senior Pentagon official said the number of US troops needed to carry out the White House's security plan could approach 30,000, significantly more than projected in January.

Essential to ending the conflict, General Petraeus insisted, was identifying militant groups who were “reconcilable” and to bring them into the political process. “Putting Iraq above personal and sectarian agendas will be critical,” he said, warning that such negotiations would “determine in the long run the success of this effort.

“There is no military solution to a problem like that in Iraq. Military action is necessary to help improve security... but it is not sufficient. There needs to be a political aspect.”

The comments followed three days of unrelenting violence, in which attacks by Sunni insurgents on Shia pilgrims left more than 150 dead and dramatically increased political tensions.

Speaking inside Baghdad’s fortified Green Zone, General Petraeus acknowledged that the nation had witnessed a particularly bloody period of insurgent attacks since coalition and Iraqi forces began their much-vaunted security sweep three weeks ago.

Despite a drop in the number of bodies found shot and dumped around the capital - from around 40 to 50 a day to single digits on some days – there are few signs of a let-up in bombings, with recent attacks including a suicide bombing at a mainly Shia university and an assassination attempt against one of Iraq’s vice presidents.

Of the reinforcements promised by the Pentagon, 17,500 have been pledged to Baghdad. General Petraeus said the full contingent should be in the nation by June, with one army brigades already in place, and another was partially deployed.

story.lotto.ap.jpg
Mega Millions lottery co-winner Ed Nabors collected a huge check Wednesday.

ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- Sometimes it pays to run a little late.

Truck driver Ed Nabors was a little behind on his way to work Tuesday morning, so he didn't stop for coffee at his usual place.

At lunchtime he bought a cup at nearby Favorite Market convenience store and chose to spend $10 on lottery tickets.

Good decision.

Nabors, 52, of Rocky Face, Georgia, discovered Wednesday morning that he had won half the record-setting $390 million Mega Millions jackpot in Tuesday night's drawing.

"I'm still numb," he said at a news conference in Atlanta. (Watch lottery official's advice on what winners should do first Video)

Nabors was handed a giant replica check for $116,557,083. He will net about $80 million after taxes, Georgia Lottery Corp. spokeswoman Tandi Reddick said.

He will receive the actual payment in about 10 days. Asked how much longer he will be a truck driver, Nabors quipped, "About 10 more days."

Nabors choked up briefly while telling reporters how he plans to use some of the money.

"My daughter has wanted a house and to get out of a mobile home for a long time," he said, "and I think she just got it."

He added that he probably would buy some lakefront property for himself. (Read what you would do: football teams, an island, an internship on "The Colbert Report")

The winning numbers were 16-22-29-39-42, plus the Mega Ball, 20.

Nabors let the store's Mega Millions terminal choose his numbers for him; the winning combination was the sixth set out of 10, he said.

Mega Millions is a multistate lottery played in California, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Texas, Virginia and Washington.

The other winning ticket was sold at Campark Liquors in Woodbine, New Jersey, said New Jersey Lottery Commission spokesman Dominick DeMarco.

The holder of that ticket has not yet stepped forward.

Bleach Exile

Bleach Karakurachou Town Map

Let me explain to you how this town map of Karakurachou works. First off Karakurachou is the town where Ichigo and his friends live, go school and where everything takes place in Bleach when its not in the Soul Society or Hueco Mundo.

The map is a simple system it has numbers or letters and each letter or number has a defination below (a legend). Each number or letter represents something that happened in the manga or anime, mainly the manga for its what this map is primarly based on. For those of you who are strictly anime fans and you do not read the manga then there are a few spoilers here.

Unfortunatly at this time we do not have a map of the Soul Society; we hope in the near future we will but at this moment in time it's not available. This map is up to date with the manga upto chapter 178, we do know that there are other locations that are not on this map do to them be shown in chapters 179+ we will do our best to keep you update on these locations but will be unable to show you where they took place on the town map until there has been another map released with these new locations on them.

If you have any questions about this map or wish to become an information writer at bleachexile then please don't hestitate to ask us by emailing us at bleachxl@gmail.com!

Record Mega Millions jackpot draws fans

March 6, 2007
NEW YORK --Lottery machines cranked out tickets at a dizzying rate Tuesday as the multistate Mega Millions game drew bettors with a jackpot estimated at a record $355 million.
Because of the huge prize and publicity, Massachusetts and 11 other participating states agreed to move Tuesday night's drawing from the game's usual home in Atlanta to New York's Times Square.
Although this would be the biggest Mega Millions jackpot, there was a $363 million jackpot in 2000 when it was known as the seven-state Big Game. That prize was split by two winners.
The competing Powerball game -- available in 29 states, the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands -- has the record for the largest single winner with $314.9 million, on Christmas Day.
The odds of winning the Mega Millions jackpot are about 1 in 176 million.
At the small Fountain News convenience store in downtown Cincinnati, manager Vinay Patel expected to sell 2,500 to 3,000 tickets by the end of the day.
"Some people have bought as many as 200 tickets at a time," Patel said Tuesday morning.
Ron Thomas, who owns a nearby restaurant, stopped in for two tickets, saying: "You can always hope."
"I've never won a big one, but there's always a chance," he said. "I'm like everybody else. I want a new house and a new car, but the first thing I would do if I won is take the day off."
Mega Millions tickets are sold in Massachusetts, California, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Texas, Virginia and Washington state.

Tsunami warning passes after Indonesian quake

Last Updated: Tuesday, February 20, 2007 | 9:18 AM ET

Panicked Indonesians fled from trembling buildings Tuesday after a 6.5-magnitude earthquake triggered a brief tsunami warning, officials said.

But Fauzi, a seismologist who goes by only one name, said the tsunami warning turned out to be a false alarm.

"We called local authorities in Ternate and coastal areas to warn them of a potential tsunami," he said. One hour after the quake struck, there were no signs of seismically triggered waves, he said.

Ternate, the capital of Maluku island, was 209 kilometres from where the quake struck. The quake was also 375 kilometres from the northernmost city on Sulawesi island, Manado, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

By the time the tremors ended, it appeared as though the quake, which centred at a depth of about 32 kilometres, did most of its damage by putting cracks in buildings. It was not immediately clear if there were any injuries.

A powerful 7.3-magnitude quake last month struck roughly the same spot as Tuesday's epicentre. That quake killed three people.

The onset of Tuesday's quake roused fears of a repeat of the December 2004 tsunamis that overwhelmed Indonesia's Sumatra island, killing more than 230,000 people. About 131,000 people alone were killed in Indonesia's Aceh province, and a tsunami off Java island wiped out nearly 5,000.

Indonesia, the world's largest archipelago, is prone to seismic upheaval because of its location on the so-called Pacific "Ring of Fire," an arc of volcanoes and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin.

Werewolf!

Man tells police that he's a werewolf

FOND DU LAC, Wis. --A former inmate told police that he was a werewolf and could change shapes after he was arrested for breaking into a woman's apartment. Robert Marsh, 39, appeared Friday in Fond du Lac County Circuit Court on charges of criminal trespassing, criminal damage to property, disorderly conduct and possession of marijuana.

A woman called police about 3 a.m. Thursday and said Marsh broke through the deadbolt on her door and grabbed her. Two men in the home stopped him, a criminal complaint said.

The woman said she had been letting Marsh stay with her since his release from prison several days earlier because he was homeless, the complaint said.

Marsh had been drinking heavily and claimed to be a werewolf and involved in a witch religion, the woman told police. When police arrested Marsh, he told them he was a werewolf who could change forms, the complaint said.

Marsh had a small amount of marijuana on him when he was arrested, the complaint said.

Marsh was scheduled for a court hearing on March 14. Cash bail was set at $5,000.

USS JFK

I was prepared to go to the USS JFK.

Made lots of plans, car pooled to South Station to get the Silver Line.

To our disappointment, the buses to the USS JFK were suspended.

We were all in the South Station, paid and entered the T-station, but the Silver Line were not running to the USS JFK.

We could not even get a refund.

The MBTA is REALLLLLLY REALLLLLLY bad.

Parking near the south station isn't cheap too!

A nice day out, turned bad but bad public transportation in Boston.

Senators Regret Remarks on Troops

WASHINGTON, March 1 — They come from different parties and have opposite views on what should be done in Iraq. But both Senator John McCain and Senator Barack Obama have now had to express regret for saying that American lives have been “wasted” in battle.

Mr. McCain, the Arizona Republican who has been a big supporter of the war and has backed President Bush’s call for more troops, made his remarks Wednesday in an appearance on “Late Show With David Letterman” while criticizing the White House’s management of the war.

“Americans are very frustrated, and they have every right to be,” he said. “We’ve wasted a lot of our most precious treasure, which is American lives, over there.”

Mr. Obama, the Illinois Democrat who has been a critic of the war from the start, made a similar remark in a visit to Iowa after announcing his candidacy. “We ended up launching a war that should have never been authorized and should have never been waged, and to which we now have spent $400 billion and have seen over 3,000 lives of the bravest young Americans wasted,” he said.

Mr. McCain was criticized on Thursday by the Democratic National Committee for making the remark, just as Mr. Obama had been criticized by conservative groups.

“How is it that John McCain now believes American lives are being wasted, yet he so stubbornly supports the president’s plan to escalate the war in Iraq and put more American lives in harm’s way?” asked Karen Finney, a spokeswoman for the Democratic committee.

Mr. McCain and Mr. Obama responded to the criticisms the same way: by recanting remarks they said they regretted.

“I should have used the word ‘sacrificed,’ as I have in the past,” Mr. McCain said. “No one appreciates and honors more than I do the selfless patriotism of American service men and women in Iraq.”

Yet another Bomb in Boston!!

Damn, if its box like, the Boston Police or "Homeland Security" sure like to blow it up!

It is now a traffic counter that was the target... Well done, err. Bomb experts.

My dream career now is to work for the Boston Police Bomb Squad.

I'd love to blow up random "Box like things" that does not resemble bombs.

Q) Do people learn from their Mistakes?

A) Not people in the city hall of Boston!!

Feb 28, 2007! (3:30pm Boston Financial District)

(WBZ) BOSTON There were some tense moments in Boston’s financial district Wednesday morning as police were forced to blow up a suspicious device.

The bomb squad shut down busy Devonshire Street after someone spotted a green box chained to a no parking sign.

The box turned out to be some kind of traffic counting device and was completely harmless.
